Ways for Kids to Earn Money

When my two children were 6 and 4, they wanted money.  Money to buy something sweet.  Money to buy something to play with.  Money to buy something to wear.  Money! Money! Money!  How could I find ways for kids to earn money?  Did I want to be an ATM machine for my kids forever?!  Was it possible for young children to earn their own money? Was it important to teach them about money this early in life?

Being a mommy is not easy.  And becoming the best mommy I could be was very challenging.  As a mother, one of my jobs is to raise my children so that they can one day live on their own.  Earn their own money. Pay their own bills.  If I was truly passionate about my role as the mother of Xanthe, then age 6, and Quinn, then age 4, there had to be ways for kids to earn money – even kids as young as mine!

But first, why is it so important for kids to have their own money?  I know why it is important for me to have money.  Having money gives me power.  With money, I can buy what I want or give some away to help someone out.  I can save money to use on a rainy day.  I can also invest some of my money and make is work for me.  And with all these choices, I felt very good inside.  Having money strengthened my self-esteem.  If money did all that for me, imagine my kids feeling that way. ;o)

In fact, that’s exactly what I wanted to do for my kids – empower them! I thought to myself:  “My kids need to learn how to make their own money and how to make their money work hard for them.  They need to become confident in themselves so that they are better able to make wise money decisions.” There is no time to wait!  Remember that saying “the early bird catches the worm?”  Well, learning ways for kids to earn money is better taught earlier in life than later!  ;o)

So, there’s no better time to start educating children to learn ways for

kids to earn money than when they are young – even as young as 4 and 6!  I started thinking of different ways and I’m here to share some of my ideas with you to share with your kids:

  • Doing special chores above the regular ones or odd jobs, like clipping coupons from newspapers and magazines and organize them (for you or your neighbors).
  • Take on some dirty work, like cleaning cars or washing windows (low ones!)
  • Care for others, like helping out at a toddler’s birthday party.
  • Make things and sell them, like yard signs (“Thanks for slowing down” is a good one.) and banners (welcoming people home or celebrating birthdays).

In fact, as long as you are passionate about teaching your children ways for kids to earn money, you will be well on your way to raising well-prepared, empowered, money savvy young adults. ;o)

Never let the age of your child prevent you from helping him or her learn about money.

Great post Amanda. THis is an attitude that should be inculcated in children from an early age. I adopted a teenager and she is definitely using me as her personal ATM. This has to stop. I will definitely be more insistent that she become more creative and find ways to generate income for herself. Thanks

      Thanks Jean,

I know what you mean, if we can instill these positive money habits into our kids when they are young then we won’t fall victim to the ‘ATM machine syndrome’ once they hit their teenage years and not only will they stop abusing us to fulfill their every monetary need but they will actually become empowered to find their own financial solutions and be WAY better prepared for their grown up lives once they leave our nests.

There are just WAY too many young adults having to move back home to their mom and dad’s because of poor financial decisions.

Thanks again for your great input here Jean, you’re so awesome! ;o)

My boys are 6 and 4 and wanting MONEY! The university near here was offering $100 for kids (with parents help) to complete a series of questionnaires relating to food and activity. It was a fun way for them to earn money to buy their treasured items.

  3. Great post Amanda! With an almost 13 yr old and an almost 10 yr old, the money request are becoming more frequent and I can’t wait to start getting them excited about earning their own. In fact their mom and I were just saying there should be “entrepreneur” classes in middle school teaching kids about internet marketing, SEO, product creation and launches etc.

Thanks for having and sharing your passion!!!!!

      Thanks Patrick,

I think that would such a fabulous idea to have an internet entrepreneur class in school, what a fabulous way to get our kids and teens prepared for their world around them. The internet is growing fast and won’t be going away any time soon, so if we can teach our kids how to make money from the internet rather than just spend money on the internet then they will be MILES ahead!

And then of course the next course should be on teaching them how to manage that money so it works for them! Instead of what usually happens where we have to continually work for money ;o(
